Better to get started and make mistakes, then not get started at all!

For years this little mantra has been emailed, spoke, and even published for millions
to take to heart.  My problem was, like many of you I have to assume, I never listened
or took it to heart.

Often I spent years waiting for something to be perfect before I would let the world
see it…much to our mentors dismay!

Finally, I got over my pride and my analness and gave action a try.  It was tough
letting go of the perfection gene at first, but in the end I couldn’t believe the
results we received.

Guy Kawasaki says “Perfect is the enemy of good enough.  When you product or
service is good enough, get it out, because cash flows when you start shipping.
You’ll also learn what your customers truly want you to fix.  It’s a trade-off:
your reputation versus cash flow, so you can’t ship pure crap. Butyou can’t wait
for perfection either.”

I witnessed this phenomenon first hand again this weekend, and was reminded by the power of
action. Pay attention, and enjoy the lesson—and if you haven’t paid attention to it
before I am telling you this is proof.

For the last 3 month my sister-in-law has been working on opening a new Cupcake Bakery
somewhere in our neighborhood.  She finally got a space, just 4 weeks ago.

We worked late nights and weekends trying to get the place ready and perfect for
a Grand Valentines Opening…the perfect start to a cupcake bakery.

One problem I was observing, but keeping to myself for obvious reasons, was my
sister-in-law had “THIS VISION”. Unfortunately, “THIS VISION” was not coming to reality
very easy.

Brief back ground on the sister-in-law…I love her dearly but she usually is not
satisfied unless her “VISIONS” are 100% met (house, wedding, 14 locations for the cupcake
passed up because it wasn’t perfect, etc)

I can admit when I am wrong.  She opened a day early, and the store was only about 80%
to par.

All day Saturday we ran out of cupcakes, we ran out of boxes, we had a hard time figuring
out the register, and worst of all IT WAS A BLAZING SUCCESS…

Everyone had a great time, they sold more than expected, learned what worked and what didn’t,
and grabbed some great customers…without being 100% ready.

We can learn soooooo much from “just taking action”
